Phytophthora species have historically been delimited by their morphology, cytology and biochemistry [3, 4, 5]. More than 50 species have been identified based on morphological characteristics [6]. Mycelial growth, oospores and sporangia characteristics, size and shape differences in reproductive structures are used based on taxonomic keys of. Phytophthora citrophthora. P. citrophthora was commonly recovered during the Virginia survey. The heterothallic P. citrophthora can be easily differentiated from the homothallic species by the absence of sexual structures in single cultures.P. citrophthora produces papillate, non-caducous sporangia (Table 1), which are often asymmetrically shaped and may possess more than one .

Additionally, the taxonomic status of the related species P. erythroseptica is also a matter of controversy. Phytophthora infestans is an oomycete or water mold, a microorganism that causes the serious potato and tomato disease known as late blight or potato blight.(Early blight, caused by Alternaria solani, is also often called "potato blight".)Late blight was a major culprit in the s European, the Irish, and the Highland potato organism can also infect some other Class: Oomycota.

Notes on Taxonomy and Nomenclature Top of page The taxonomic understanding of species of Phytophthora and related organisms has been improving rapidly (Brasier, ; Brasier and Hansen, ).It is now clear that oomycete fungi are not related to ascomycete and basidiomycete fungi.

Erwin and Ribeiro () discussed the change in understanding of the. Systematic position and Taxonomy of Phytophthora: Systematic position and Taxonomy of Phytophthora The old Phycomycetes has been split to induct many independent classes, one of them is Oomycetes.

Sparrow () questioned the validity of the term ‘Oomycetes. Kreisel () and Shaffer () have excluded them from the kingdom fungi. Phytophthora species are responsible for economically important diseases of a wide range of agronomic and ornamental crops. Species identification for Phytophthora has traditionally been based upon microscopic examination of morphological characters and growth characteristics of the pathogen on specific media (27, 35).Variations in the morphological characters of both the Cited by:.
